Disasters impact people from different at-risk groups differently. When assessing seasonal calendars for disaster risk reduction, make sure to include women, older persons and persons with disabilities to find out which events have an impact on their capacity to cope with disasters (such as planting and harvesting seasons, disease prevalence and high and low points of employment, income and expenditures).
To ensure inclusion:
-
Meet at an accessible venue to discuss the seasonal calendar and provide assistance with transport to the meeting for those who need it.
-
Use brightly coloured objects to create the map or use tactile maps so that persons with visual impairments can see or feel what is there. Narrate the process so they know what is being added.
-
Discuss the accessibility of community resources, facilities and buildings in relation to different hazards and seasonal events.
-
Identify times when services are more or less available.
